I was so sure shock treatment was illegal now. But I just googled it and Wiki says Electroconvulsive therapy is still in use but the patient must consent and sign papers, which I'm sure wasn't the case in the beginning. I'm thinking back to films where I've seen it and it definitely shouldn't have been used, like Changelling for example.
To me it sounds barbaric but I guess they wouldn't still be doing it if it didn't produce results. *shrug*
