The Carnegie Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book for children and young people. Established by The Library Association in 1936, in memory of the Scottish-born philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, who resolved that “if ever wealth came to me that it should be used to establish free libraries.” By the time of his death, Carnegie set up more than 2800 libraries. The medal is now awarded by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. The winner receives a golden medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice.

Please note that the year refers to when the book was published rather than when the medal was awarded i.e. the 2005 winner was announced and the medal presented in July 2006.
